Workshop discusses strategy for managing and promoting the value of Trang An heritage
The opening session of the international workshop "Converting the economic values of the Trang An landscape complex and enhancing the broader world heritage destination" was held in the northern province of Ninh Binh on March 6.

Earlier on March 5, the discussion session of the workshop was completed, introducing key research findings from the project on “Converting the economic values of the Trang An landscape complex”.

In his opening remarks, Jonathan Baker, Head of the UNESCO Office in Vietnam, emphasised that Trang An is a heritage site with remarkable biodiversity and archaeological significance, serving as a testament to Vietnam's historical and cultural identity and its harmonious relationship with nature. However, like many other world heritage sites, Trang An faces a critical challenge in preserving its outstanding universal values while simultaneously maximising its economic potential for the long-term benefit of the community and future generations.

Jonathan Baker, Head of the UNESCO Office in Vietnam, delivers a speech at the workshop.

UNESCO has been working closely with local authorities, research institutions, and international partners to bridge global expertise with local needs, ensuring that Trang An continues to thrive for generations to come.

Since the announcement of the international workshop "Converting the economic values of the Trang An landscape complex and enhancing of the broader world heritage destination" in October 2024, significant progress has been made in turning this vision into action. This study examines Trang An's economic contributions across four key dimensions, providing a deeper understanding of the heritage site's role in supporting local livelihoods, sustainable land use, and long-term economic resilience.

Chairman of Ninh Binh Provincial People’s Committee Pham Quang Ngoc speaks at the workshop.

The workshop aimed to recognise the full role, position, and economic valuation of heritage, as well as the value and contributions of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex in the present context and its prospects. It also sought to propose solutions for heritage conservation and sustainable tourism development linked to local livelihoods, cultural industries, and the heritage economy.

In particular, Trang An World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site serves as a central driver and foundation for transforming Ninh Binh into a millennial heritage city and a creative city.

According to Chairman of Ninh Binh Provincial People’s Committee Pham Quang Ngoc, Ninh Binh is one of the pioneering provinces in realising the economic potential of the heritage and in promoting the brand of the Trang An Landscape Complex, a UNESCO mixed cultural and natural heritage site.

It is hoped that the insights and contributions shared at the workshop will not only help Ninh Binh accurately and comprehensively assess the economic value and brand of a mixed cultural and natural heritage site in Vietnam through this valuation project but also establish scientific and practical foundations for studying the economic and branding the value of world heritage sites in Vietnam and globally.
